UF Proton Therapy Institute Expert Leads Proton Therapy Discussions in Singapore

September 21, 2011

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Radiation oncology and proton therapy expert Robert Malyapa, M.D., Ph. D., from the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute was a featured presenter at three cancer symposiums focusing on head and neck, skull-base, spine and central nervous system (CNS) treatments.

  • The first talk was on Aug. 31, at the lead cancer treatment facility in Singapore, the National Cancer Center Singapore (NCCS). Dr. Malyapa led discussions about the benefits of proton therapy for cancers of the head and neck, skull-base, spine and CNS, which are traditionally difficult areas to treat.
  • At the international conference, Tri-Society Head and Neck Oncology Meeting on Sept. 1, Dr. Malyapa discussed “Evolving Strategies,” for cancer treatment, the conference theme, during his lecture, “Proton Therapy for Head and Neck Cancers – The UFPTI Experience.” The medical communities of Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, the host city, were represented at the conference.
  • Lastly, on Sept. 5, Dr. Malyapa presented at the National University Hospital, Singapore, the nation’s only university hospital about using proton therapy to treat cancers of the head and neck, skull-base, spine and CNS.

“I think these talks will provide us with an opportunity to share our large experience on the role of proton therapy and its attendant advantages in the complex sites of the head and neck, skull-base, spine and CNS,” said Dr. Malyapa. “Hopefully, we could enter into a collaboration that would allow us to bring patients from the Far East to our center for treatment,” he continued.

The UF Proton Therapy Institute, open since 2006, treats cancer patients with proton therapy, a form of radiation that destroys cancerous tumors while preventing damage to healthy, normal body tissue and organs. Proton therapy is the only radiation treatment that can accomplish both an optimal high dose and spare healthy tissue, especially for hard to reach tumors in the brain, head and neck, prostate and lung and for cancer in children.

UF Proton Therapy Institute is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization affiliated with the UF College of Medicine, dedicated to delivering state-of-the-art cancer treatment and setting new standards for treating and curing the disease. The cancer treatment facility houses both conventional radiation and proton therapy, and delivers proton therapy to 100 patients a day.
