Marion Conley and his wife Dana Marie chose proton therapy over surgery to treat his prostate cancer because proton therapy allowed him to continue to exercise. Proton therapy is a unique form of radiation therapy that targets tumors and reduces risk of treatment side effects.

03-08-2012Man receiving proton therapy for prostate cancer running in Gate River Run

Ocala resident Jim Samuelson (60-years-old) is in Jacksonville because he's being treated for prostate cancer at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute. He decided he was going to turn his diagnosis into something positive and on his first day of proton therapy, Feb. 1, he also signed up for the Gate River Run. He's been training every day during his treatment by running six miles and doing a one-hour spin class at the gym. He is also a volunteer at the event today and tomorrow helping to hand out runners' registration packets at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. The run is Saturday, March 10.
